Shield Spill Repellant (Fabric Protector)
1. Due to excessive dust and casual maintenance of furnishing fabrics in India, sofa / carpets / curtains / car seat covers etc. tend to become dirty very soon and lose their charm. Once a fabric has got a stain there are only two options:
- Let it remain like that
- Get it charged or drycleaned
Now there is third option i.e. protect it with SHIELD. It is a chemical specially formulated by one of the biggest companies in USA (M/s Fibre Shield Inc.) keeping in mind the climatic and living conditions in India. Once the fabric is treated, it becomes water and stain resistant and fabric looks like new for years.
2. SHIELD is effective from one to three years depending upon the quality of fabric, traffic and maintenance etc. It is to be applied on a clean surface.
3. SHIELD is available in two forms:
- Spray cans (sufficient to cover 20 to 30 sq. ft.) which a customer can buy from market and apply it himself as per the directions given on the can and.
- In case the area is large or the fabric is heavy e.g. carpet, chemical is available in loose form which can be applied either by company’s technicians or by the customer himself using spray guns available at hardware stores. While drying takes approx. three hours, it is advisable that usage is done after 24 hours.
4. SHIELD works as a protective layer on the fabric without affecting, in any way, the feel / breath / color etc. and also increases life of the fabric many times thus is an excellent value for money for those who value spotlessness.
SHIELD – Flame Retardant
2. What is Flame Retardant : A chemical formulation that is sprayed on fabric to be treated. Once treated that fabric does not catch fire for some time and when it does, the flame extinguishes within itself and ‘char length’ does not spread for more than 6”. Thus there is no risk of fire spreading through fabric.
3. What is the need to flame retard a fabric: Fabrics catch fire quickly and in many places fire has started through furnishing fabrics specially curtains catching fire. Similarly for workers in fire prone factories with big furnaces etc. fire retardant clothes are a must….and so on.
4. How is it applied: The chemical is to be sprayed with the help of any normal spray gun. Since this is a ‘slow drying’ formulation, treated fabric is required to dry completely (for 24 hours – more or less could depend upon weather). Once dry, the treatment is complete.
5. What about the quality of the product: Manufactured by M/s Fibre Shield Inc., USA, one of the best companies dealing in such products that are sold and compare with the best all over the globe, it’s results are classified as Class A fire rating and this holds certification from California State Fire Marshal and City of New York, Bureau of Standard and Appeals, two most difficult and widely accepted standards to achieve in fire retardancy in USA.
4. Any adverse affect on fabric or person who does the treatment: none.
Certificates:
New York City: Flame Shield
has been approved by the Government of the City of New York through
the Bureau of Standard and Appeals under Colander Number 141-89-SM.
ASTM –E-84: This is a complex test
that Flameshield treated fabric is geared to pass this test.
NEPA-701: This is very similar
to the requirements of the City of New York and is considered one of,
if not the toughest fire codes in USA. Flameshield treated fabric
is geared to pass this test.
(100% nylon treated with Flameshield
will pass ASTM-E84 test and not NEPA-701.)
All above tests are class A.
Note:
1. Flameshield can be applied to wood
and paper as well to achieve flame retardancy.
2. The treated fabric decomposes under the influence of the flame forming a strong localized ‘char’ with no afterglow or no spread of flame outside the charred area. The treated fabric does not catch fire and once it does, the flame extinguishes within itself and ‘char length’ does not spread for more than 6”.
